Wisdom of a Great Man

"Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

As we celebrate this civil rights leader's birthday, let us not forget the work we still have left to do.
Happy MLK Day!

Family Photo Time!

We had some photos taken last month while we were in Illinois visiting Todd's family for Christmas.  Our photographer, Aly from PB&J's Photography, was such a blessing!  She prayed with the kids before their sessions and asked Jesus to help her capture their true hearts.  She also had them pray that they could listen and follow directions. Here's a link to the photo slideshow.

New Year, New Heart

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
(2 Corinthians 5:17)

I've written before that I'm a list-maker.  I impose my love of organization upon my children at every opportunity.  So when I came across this New Year's printable on Pinterest, I printed off two copies: one for Maddie to complete herself, and one for Ava and I to complete together.  I also found one for adults, which Todd and I will be sitting down (hopefully together!) to complete very soon.

It's my desire to help mark the years not only by how much the kids have grown, but also by what they've learned.  In this way I hope to develop lifelong learners at home, just as I hope to develop lifelong learners among my students at school.

The new year is an important time to remind ourselves that Christ makes all things new.  No matter how deeply lost, alone, or unlovable you feel, Christ can do amazing things with an open heart.  If you desire change, pray about it.  Write down your deepest desire somewhere you'll see it.  Stick it in your Bible.  Read your Bible.  Then begin to act on it.  And keep praying about it.

Happy New Year!
